Advocating for Children!!

120 Lenawee children and parents joined 3400 people attending the annual Star Power Rally in Lansing May 19th. Great Start Collaboratives  from all over Michigan voiced their support for early childhood education. Check out the video.

State spending on school readiness has saved taxpayers $1.15 billion over a 25 year period  according to a Wilder Research study prepared for Michigan's Early Childhood Investment Corporation.

Building Public Support:
  • Presence through outreach events in 12 schools districts in Lenawee, 669 on our email list, 99 locations where our material is distributed
  • Had a Parent Coalition Meeting in Addison
  • Actively recruiting parents in each of the school districts
  • Continued participation in bi-weekly Star Power conference calls, as well as monthly Advocacy conference calls
  • Recruited 115 parents, children, caregivers, grandparents, and educators to attend Star Power in Lansing and show how important our state's investment is to families
  • Held a Town Hall meeting May 7th at Madison Schools with local and state candidates in attendance
  • Started to prepare for our State Candidate interviews that will begin in June
  • Planted sunflowers that kids from all over the county made at the old Courthouse in Adrian and City Hall in Tecumseh.

  • Presence in local media: Participated in the 7:40 Spot on WLEN to promote local Star Power events in Adrian and Tecumseh
Referent and Constituency Group for Parents:
•    Parent Coalition Meetings in 7 different locations throughout the county.
•    Two parent meetings at subsidized apartment complexes
•    Provide an opportunity for parents to share their concerns

Support the Work of the GSC:
•    Provide Parent Representatives
•    Attend Board Meetings
•    Participate in work groups
•    Attend conferences and technical assistance meetings
•    Sharing the Strategic Plan with the coalition.

Educate Policy-Makers
•    Attend local coffee hours
•    Monthly Letters to the Editor
•    Developed an advocacy plan
•    Developed a time line and actively working towards Star Power
